Insulating your garage door is one of the best ways to improve energy efficiency, store items safely, and create a more comfortable space year-round. While installing insulation panels is one of the more obvious parts of this process, garage door seals play an underrated, but important role in keeping your garage warm and protected. If you’re looking for advice on how to insulate your garage door, keep reading to find out easy, actionable steps to do this and why door seals are key.
Clean the inside panels of the door with soap and water so that any adhesives can stick properly and then measure the height and width of each (make sure to do this for each panel individually as they may slightly differ). Check for any protruding bolts, hinges, handles or anything else that might get in the way of the insulation.
Cut your insulation material of choice (e.g. foam boards or insulation panels) and apply your adhesive to the panels, this can be double-sided tape or adhesive pads for example. Then press the insulation against each panel carefully making sure not to leave any gaps. If it’s a foil-backed material you’re using, make sure its reflective side is facing inward.
Adding insulation will have increased the door weight so make sure to test it to see if it opens and closes properly. In case it’s too heavy, the springs will likely need adjusting. If it functions without any obvious strain or excessive noise however there shouldn’t be any need to do this.
If there’s any old weatherstripping along the sides of the door, remove that and install new weatherstripping such as a garage door multi seal from Stormstop you can easily fit using the double-sided tape and self-tapping screws it comes supplied with. Make sure it’s laid snugly against the frame.
Remove your old sealing and install a new garage door bottom seal making sure it covers any gaps at the bottom. You can use a simple rubber garage door bottom seal for this, or if the gap’s larger, a threshold seal might be best.
Keep on reading to find out more about the sealing options you might want to consider and the difference a good garage door seal can make when insulating your garage door.
Garage door sealing (also known as weatherproofing) is a great cost-effective way to improve your garage’s insulation by addressing one of the most common weak spots in your garage - gaps around the door. Without proper sealing, cold air seeps in through these gaps and it creates drafts. As a result, the overall temperature drops down much more quickly.
Effective sealing closes these gaps, keeping the warm air inside and preventing the cold air from entering. This makes it especially valuable during winter.

Door seals are one of the best and most effective ways to insulate your garage, preventing cold air from coming through gaps. However, if you’re looking for additional methods to keep your space warmer for longer, you can combine door sealing with wall and/or roof insulation, which can make a significant difference, especially in older buildings. Additionally, you can look into garage door insulation kits. Those typically consist of foam, reflective foil, or polystyrene panels, and are lightweight and easy to install.
If you plan on sealing your doors yourself but you’re not sure where to start or what exactly to do, don’t worry - it’s nothing you can’t handle with some tools and a bit of guidance.
